Vision and departure - 150 years of the Vienna World's Fair - Vienna invites you to an exciting journey into the past!

Dec. 19, 2022
150 years ago, the World's Fair took place in Vienna. It was the driving force behind Vienna's development into a cosmopolitan city. Even today, the city benefits from the achievements of that time. The World's Fair (the first took place in London in 1851) was a showcase for technology and arts and crafts. Exhibitors from all over the world showed the latest achievements. The world was rethought.
There was a boom in hotel buildings and urban development projects.
One example is the legendary Hotel Imperial, still shining in its glory today and exuding the nostalgia of yesteryear. In order to make a good journey possible, 6 train stations were opened at once. From there it was possible to travel in all directions. Today, Vienna is an important hub for the railroad and thus a good destination for sustainable travel, especially from neighboring countries.
Today, the cosmopolitan city of Vienna is one of the most popular destinations for city tourism and for congresses and trade fairs. To meet the demand, new hotels and attractions are constantly being opened and Vienna thus continues the trend that began 150 years ago. Vienna continues to offer new opportunities to be explored and is constantly evolving.  From mid-2023, there will be numerous special exhibitions to mark the anniversary, for example at the MAK- Museum of Applied Arts, the Weltmuseum or even the Technisches Museum.

Together with our partner, Wien Tourismus, we have put together some exciting tips for you:

Prater:

The Prater was once the hunting ground of Emperor Josef II. In 1766 it was given to the Viennese* for recreation. In 1873 the world exhibition took place there. The Panorama Vienna revives the former tradition of the rotunda of the World's Fair.  From mid-2023, 360° analog art will be visualized on a 34-meter-high screen. Today, the Prater perfectly combines pleasure and nature. For those hungry for experience, it offers more than 250 attractions ranging from nostalgic ring games to modern roller coasters. The Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel, one of the city's most famous landmarks, can also be found in the Prater, offering visitors a wonderful opportunity to view the city from above. Adjacent to this is the green part, the "Green Prater". This is a vast meadow and forest area and offers the perfect opportunity to exercise, walk and relax.

Coffee houses

What would Vienna be without its coffee houses? Culinary delights are written in capital letters in Vienna.  Franz Landtmann opened the famous Cáfe Landtmann for the World Exhibition, 1873. It was to become the most elegant coffee house. It was well received by visitors and gradually more and more coffeehouses opened, giving rise to the legendary coffeehouse culture. It is not for nothing that the coffeehouse has been a UNESCO Intangible World Heritage Site since 2011. During a visit you can see for yourself the atmosphere with boxes, Thonet chairs, marble and newspaper tables and immerse yourself in the charm of the coffeehouses.

Drinking water

Have you ever consciously drunk the drinking water in Vienna? Since 1873, a high-spring pipeline has been carrying spring water from the Alps into the city, supplying it with crystal-clear drinking water. Visitors can see this for themselves, as there are over 1,300 drinking water fountains in the city. By the way: So that the coffee house visitors can convince themselves of the good drinking water, even today a glass of water is served with the coffee.
