Programme:
The river landscape between Vienna and Bratislava has been under special protection as part of the Donau-Auen National Park since 1996. Here, the Danube forms a diverse mosaic of habitats for a wealth of animal and plant species that you can explore.
During a one-hour guided tour through the multimedia national park exhibition DonAUräume you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the floodplain landscape: You will learn “theatrically” how the floodplain is formed. You can then travel through time using multimedia.
From a bird's eye view you can look down on the Danube floodplains, and the "Danube Mermaids" bring the most important things to the point. Also take a look at the National Park Lounge and climb the lookout tower. During a tour with a national park ranger: inside on the castle island, you will get to know the European pond turtle and several species of snakes. Visit fish underwater - but without getting wet, and learn more about the abundance of plants in the alluvial forest.
Enjoy a 3-course menu and get ready for your upcoming task.
Accompanied by national park rangers, you will take a dinghy tour on a branch of the Danube (basic physical fitness is a prerequisite). You will find information about beaver territories and learn about the tracks of animal national park residents on the bank. Sometimes you also catch a glimpse of kingfishers, herons or red deer.
During the subsequent walk through the alluvial forest, you will discover dead wood, which is very much alive, learn about the exciting strategies of the plants and find out why flooding shapes this river landscape. Amphibians, reptiles and interesting insects accompany you on your way.
Smaller groups (max. 26 people) can also explore the fascinating landscape from a Tschaike, an original replica of a historical Danube ship. During a leisurely round trip, you will experience the power of the free-flowing river and gain insights into the natural landscape of the national park from the water.
