Description
Spectacularly built on the water and surrounded by impressive mountains, the Bregenz Lake Stage offers a unique combination of nature, culture, and entertainment. In 2025, Der Freischütz will once again be performed on the lake stage in Philipp Stölzl's visually stunning production.
Der Freischütz is a German Romantic opera that combines elements of folk song, folk custom, and the supernatural. The opera tells the story of Max, a hunter who, in love, wishes to marry Agathe, the forester's daughter. To achieve this, he must complete a difficult trial shot. Desperate over his failed attempts, he makes a pact with the devil to cast free bullets that never fail. The story takes place in a village where archaic customs and supernatural powers play a role, leading to a tense conflict between good and evil.
Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz has been one of the most popular operas in German-speaking countries since its premiere in 1821. The fantastical stage design depicts a ghostly little village on the lake stage, transporting the audience and the performers on the snow-covered stage to winter – in the middle of summer.
